We need more of them participating here, Michał! I am sure others use English rulebooks!!!
I used only english rulebooks... the ones translated to polish
were just crap for me ;)
Hi Agnieszka,

Have you ever played in English?
No, I've never played in english, but I was using a lot of english words during the play, just like many of us, I think... :)

Do you not play in Amsterdam, Agnieszka? Would you play in English - since I assume you are using lots of English as a common language abroad.

I wish other people would give their opinions. There are 333 other persons lurking here.

Temat: Does Anyone play RPGs in English?

I just came to Amsterdam in March, and I don't know many people here... But if I had the possibility, I would play in english, I don't think it would be a problem :)

Agnieszka,

Would you be willing to have English conversation practice with a native speaker using RPG as an ongoing pretext for meetings? What do you think of this as a method? If you were still in Poland, would you seriously consider it?

The men hesitate.

(How much do you think it would cost? I wil tell you after you guess :) )

Temat: Does Anyone play RPGs in English?

Well... if I was still in Poland I would rather play with my friends in polish...
But if I would like to take some conversation practice in english, I think RPG could be a nice topic :)

And... about the cost... I really don't know... I suppose more than normal lessons, but I won't guess :)

25pln/45 minutes plus you get a hot meal - session lasts 3 hours.

Did you expect that, Agnieszka?
What do you think of the price?
(I plan to increase the price for new students in May. I have not decided by how much.)

Temat: Does Anyone play RPGs in English?

I don't think increasing the price is a good idea... It is almost the same price as in any english school, I think...
And its 3 times 45 minutes? or 3 hours meaning 4*45 min.? If the second it is 100pln for an RPG session... I think it's too much

Temat: Does Anyone play RPGs in English?

How much would you suggest as a fair price? Yes, the total cost is 100zl.

(A single hour "on the books" is 125zl. I mean that is the legal price. Off the books [cash in hand] 52.50zl per 45 minutes private tuition.)Aneta Bereda edytował(a) ten post dnia 05.04.08 o godzinie 22:04

It's not that much - people pay similar amount for half that time for private lessons. And it's not RPG but RPG-English-learning I understand ;-)
However, I can game master for you in Polish for half that price ;-) and I am experienced game master, as well as Polish is my native tongue ;PKrzysztof Nelken-Żbik edytował(a) ten post dnia 06.04.08 o godzinie 00:37

The whole point would be to test one's abilities with the English language :D comprehending the situations; visualizing the spoken words; and communicating exactly what is meant to be expressed and the reason for the payment. LOL.

Kind of like verbal chess.. LOLAneta Bereda edytował(a) ten post dnia 06.04.08 o godzinie 02:37

Hi Agnieszka,

How much would you consider to be a fair price for a conversation

It was obviously a joke ;) RPG is supposed to be fun, not business and not English learning :P

Krzysztof,

Would you pay for a theatre ticket, Krzysztof? Theatre would be considered by some fun and entertaining. How about ice hockey: renting the space? Or, even closer to the topic, buying the RPG rulebooks? I think sports would be just as fun as RPG, and these hobbies cost money.

People pay money to exercise for their health. They could just as easily walk (individually) rather than join a group at a gym or at a health club. Studies show it is easier to work together to realise goals.

How is any of this different from persons paying to exercise their language capability with a _language-based_ game - especially when the price is less than it would cost individually?

Aneta do not overreact ;-) that was also a joke. As I mentioned earlier I am very curious about your project and also think that RPG is business as any other entertainment businesses (fe selling rulebooks...). Maybe I did not mention that but due to this curiosity I would just pay at least once to see how it works, so hope we'll stay in touch - you've got my e-mail please send me information about the 'courses'. When I have time, I'll try to join the group. :)
In terms of gym - I do not pay for such a things. I prefer riding bike ALONE ;) I can have my kung-fu lessons in the group, but it's different story.

Sorry. Sometimes my workload gets to me. You can see (from the time of one of my posts above) I spent most of the night working on a project. So I am a little frayed this Sunday. I am back to work on it and it wont complete before Friday as is.

I sent you the PDF, right? It would be great to have you for a session. You would be only the second RPGer to play in our game - and the other is a professor in accounting at UW CMT. (Something about you numbers guys willing to try this conversation method mix.)

My apologies if I am a little aggitated. It's been a long night and a short sleep.

Also, truth to tell, I get more than my share of flak from the traditional "schoolhouse" competitors who oppose my conversation practice methods for their own amusement despite the fact I have science on my side. The native speaker has been called a satanist to his face by one school methodologist. I think everyone in this group can empathize with me about that kind of irrational OTT opposition.Aneta Bereda edytował(a) ten post dnia 06.04.08 o godzinie 16:33

Yes, I've got it, although I have not read it so far. Sorry ;) but I'll do it. The other thing is that it does not have anything in common with 'numbers'. I was in art class in secondary school, so don't judge so easily ;)

No problem at all ;)

Quite normal. Playing RPG is equal to being in a satanist cult for some people so I would just laugh if someone called me so ;)

So, let's stay in touch regarding the session. Regards,

Yes, from the private entertainment perspective, it is water off a duck's back. But, from a business standpoint, it becomes a tool for Black PR in the hands of my competitors. So far, none of them have seriously attacked me in the press - who I may add are friendly toward the concept and I have had good relations and positive exposure so far. I have established our market leadership.

But I do expect saber rattling from traditional "schoolhouse" competitors when my service is big enough to be seriously noticed. I hope to have many "friends" by then to avoid any crisis of being too successful.

Too successful.... there is a concept :)

According to topic - i wanted few times - but never had chance - usually there are in team people that don`t know english well, or even like my actual GreatestMonster doesn`t know it at all..

And about rulebooks- it`s truth , my friend even made small comic about it - Fandom Force 2
it was about new WarhammerFRP manual.

Anyway - if someone close to Warsaw wants to try ill gladly join :)Marcin Żórawski edytował(a) ten post dnia 07.04.08 o godzinie 19:39

Well, Marcin, this is one of my business interests, practicing English by RPG: general English AD&D or 3.5e and ESP using Cyberpunk 2020. I can send to you the General English student handbook, which will answer all your questions about what I offer.

If you are interested, please send me your email address and I will
send you the PDF.
