This reminds me of a student who wrote me after our first lesson that he didn't want to have lessons with me because my English was too clear and understand and he needs a "native speaker" not an "English teacher". I laughed because the email was full of spelling mistakes and poorly constructed sentences.... so he really did need an English teacher:-)

Fair point.
Some of us are capable of outdoing so called "professional teachers" simply by the fact of living abroad for number of years and "breathing in" the local slang. A degree doesn't make one wise...

It's 'centre' - only the colonialists across the Pond corrupt our language and spell it 'center' ... yuk! :)

:) are you sure about that? Cuz I'd say the folks 'across the pond' are just as correct using 'center' as you using 'centre'. And I'd bet a fair amount on 'center' being more popular worldwide than 'centre'..

It was a joke :) But you are probably right that most people in the world accept 'center'. The American rebels / colonialists tried to change the English language in the nineteenth century by making it more phonetical, as a confirmation of their independence. So they started spelling 'honor' instead of 'honour', 'neighbor' instead of 'neighbour', etc. And 'center' has become part of 'international English' ... but we Brits still spell it 'centre' :P And it's interesting that we refer to radio and TV programmes but we've adopted the colonialists'l spelling of program when referring to computer software :)

I'm not just talking about being at 'native' level.

I mean making basic errors, not understanding an average native talking at average speed and avoidance of interaction with natives.

Curiosity is the mother of knowledge, isn't it right Tatiana...? :D
I used the pronoun "us" in order to generalize a little bit: to be clear to speak on behalf of those, who have mastered their English while being abroad.
