I came across this ad by one "davekoner" who advertises the services of a "proffesional english native speaker".

Now, if it happens once, it's called a typo (I make them all the time), but if you go around all the online forums and put up an ad for "proffesional english native speaker", then that's not a typo at all!

If you wanna find the ads, but type "proffesional english native speaker" into Google and you'll get a dozen or so.Andre Chmielewski edytował(a) ten post dnia 09.03.09 o godzinie 14:48

Yes it's quiet amazeing how sum native speakers are not being able to do the spellings and sometimes the grammatics.

Having an English Teacher who makes such common spelling mistakes is a bit like paying a Personal Trainer with a beer belly or a Pox Doctor whose hair is falling out!

Even so, English is still a difficult language to spell 100% correctly.

:))) Right, Jon. "These excercises are gonna hurt, but you have to do them. I do them myself all the time." And we dejectedly look at the floor and say "alright, then. Let's go." hehe

This was the topic of some small talk I was having with a couple guys I hadn't seen in a long time. We were complaining about spelling...laughing about the trouble they had with the -rrheas,
-rrhagias, etc. The other can't spell more commonly used words without having to think or check. They're docs at a teaching hospital and superspecialists. I would want my loved ones in their care.

Maybe in this "proffesional" case it doesn't reflect teaching talent or a success rate but rather marginl business administration skills.

I saw those adverts too and you've probably seen mine around the same place, but I've not advertised for a long time.

I'm disappointed to see some people advertising who have no teaching qualification whatsoever and appear to still make money.

One student I have explained that she changed teachers because her previous native never prepared material and often started lessons my returning from the garden very dirty and even covered in jam!! Covered in Jam?? what is the world coming to?

Another student changed teachers because she said her previous native spent most of the time in lessons telling her how good he is and how all his students are all very pleased with lessons... she left...

I'm no great teacher, I got a B on the CELTA and I pride myself on being prepared, but, I'm honest with my students and tell them that if they need help with particular grammar problems then I will refer them to a Polish friend who can teach grammar much better than I can.

Why?

You should be pleased.

A lot of students just want to talk to a native.

It's a free country and a free market.

Yes, maybe disappointed is the wrong word. In fact it is. If people simply want to speak to a native then that's fine. Providing they don't advertise themselves as teachers but just as native speakers as they seem to do.

So I guess potential students just need to understand the different between somebody to talk to and somebody who is trained to help them with specific problems and in specific methods of teaching to get better results.

The thing that really baffles my mind in all this, and the reason I started the post, was that I would have run an ad I was going to post all over the internet through a SPELLCHECKER before I posted it.

There is really no excuse nowadays for spelling to be wrong. If a person writes "than" instead of "then", than [sic] I'm inclined to be more understanding. But "proffesional" doesn't exist. I have a big red line under the word on my screen as I write this.

I feel outdated. I don't use spellcheckers.
Are they browser plugin type of things?

I have a similar thing in Microsoft Office Word, though. It puts funky underlines when I write down my name.
"Ignore once / for all, or you're doomed"

Why Andre, this thing actually sounds like: "profffesional" or "prof.fesional" with a strong accent on "f". I think such misspellling might exist even if you are a native, no? It's a fail though...

No need for a plugin, it's built into the functionality of a Mac. Convenience... ahh!

Hmm... this brings up a question: ought what we say be literally transcribed into written language? So a person with a German accent can write "vee" in place of "we" because they have a tendency to speak that way?

Perhaps I don't understand your point about the "f". My point was that we should all take care to make sure to actually be professional when we are advertising our "proffesional" services; otherwise, it looks rather foolish. There are tools available to us that are ludicrously easy to use and would only take up to 10 seconds to check and then correct the error in question.Andre Chmielewski edytował(a) ten post dnia 11.03.09 o godzinie 22:18

But seriously, the stories you tell about English natives kinda comforts me. I heard some weird shit about German natives and Englishs alike.
Yeah, it's a big difference between language trainer, lector, teacher, native or just "speaker" as Ilter pointed out wisely :)

I heard a story of a German native who asked students questions and afterwards critisized them into the ground for their "wrong" believes. Hahaha. I missed that didactical meeting ;-)

No, I don't think we should bend the rules. We should keep traditional things intact. hehe. Kidding. I'm not the one who should comment on what we should do with the languages.

But you must be well aware of it already, that the phonetics of English is not so in tune with the natural sounds. Hence it is against the human logic. Just like a table, having a gender (Hi Tatiana!). There are at least 3 different types of "u"s, "a"s, "e"s and so on, in English.
I'm aware that speaking well, is a skill that goes hand in hand with good education, but speaking a language fluently doesn't mean you know how to write everything you say in a gramatically correct way.
That's what I wanted to mean.

Of course it looks foolish, no doubt about that.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 12.03.09 o godzinie 06:47

Indeed, I have a Mac (this may explain the subtle, inadvertent condescension I may communicate at time) ;-)

Yes, the schwa (the upside down "e" that's used the represent the neutral vowel in English) is an old nemesis of mine. I've read a little into the history of the English language and have learned that English spelling is very archaic at times.

Out of date or not, it's important to be proffesional about things, otherwise it's just as you said; it looks foolish.
