Temat: Girls names and their associations:

Please do not take this thread too seriously:

There seem to be far fewer first names to choose between in Poland.

Anyway, I've always associated Polish girls names with particular personality types, usually based on the first person of that name I've got to know.

Gosias are honest and dependable.
Olas are snobs.
Agnieszkas are fun.
Monikas are dangerous.
Kasias are not known for their virtue
Asias and Anias are a bit dull, and to be found eveywhere.

Any other associations.

Any comments.

The thread is intended to be lighthearted, so please don't take offence.

:)

My English friend has this compulsion to sing the chorus of this song whenever we meet
I think it's kind of nice, my one minute of fame ;)

And it's always a problem for some foreigners not to say Kasza to all Kasias :) They simply cannot hear the difference, hehe

All Basias that I've met admitted they really hated this song
by Wilki
It's awful, that's true.
Robert Gawlinski had to make a compliment for the name of his wife in this song if I remember correctly to be able to sing it. His wife was the manager of his band at that time.Lidia K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 22.05.08 o godzinie 17:48

Do girls names in Poland have 'class' connotations?

For example, in England, Sharon and Tracey are commonly regarded as 'council estate' names.

If you're looking for a one-night stand, any Iwona or Sylwia is a sure bet.

Names do tend to reflect the family's social status, Nicole and Amanda being typically blue-collar.

How about Janes? Any Jane I have met so far has been, erm..... sort of..... bitchy... :/

I would say the same about Karina and Andżelika. Think of a disco somewhere like Manieczki... thousands of Karinas and Andżelikas ;]

I wonder what associations people have with Grazynas? ;p

I was always the only Grazyna in schools and uni, and, of course, here it is not a common name ....

That's a bit of a sweeping statement.

Will you take personal responsibility for any slapped faces and bruised egos incurred by readers of anglosphere should your advice not in fact be 100% accurate?warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 22.05.08 o godzinie 18:31

Any targetted damosel should be approached with due caution. My advice was just a stereotype.

As for Tatiana, it reminds me of Eugene Onegin's muse - especially when played by Liv Tyler.

Male names should have at least one "r" sound. It is believed to be a subliminal attractor for the opposite sex ;)

Kasia and Monika are also known to have promiscuous tendencies.

I can't do the Polish "r", and this isn't true for me. A simple "Rafał" comes out as "Zafał" ;)

How 'bout "report" or "red light", "run"? "radient"?

Rafał, I said Polish "r" :) The most favorite game at any parties I've gone to in Poland is to get a dictionary and make me say such words as "rabarbar". It only got worse after I'd been to the States; when I got back, I had difficulty getting my ill-rolled "r" back at all.

Always thought of Iwona as a fat girl's name...

Ewelina - very serious, the studious type

Karolina - take themselves too seriously

Ola - unpretentious, good fun (just like Pani Ola!)

Magda - flirtatious, yet profound

Kasia - solarium bimbo

Having said that, I used to live next door to a hooker called .... Ewelina!Steve Jones edytował(a) ten post dnia 22.05.08 o godzinie 23:45
