New Foreign Minister, Free Democratic Party leader Guido Westerwelle, completed his first foreign trip over the weekend – in Poland rather than the traditional first stop of France.

It is not known whether Westerwelle, who is open about his homosexuality, brought up the subject of the homophobic atmosphere in much of Poland – nor or Kaczynski’s banning of gay pride marches in Warsaw when he was the capital’s mayor.

I thought the author of the article inserted "the gay issue" on his/her own, and that feels irrelevant to the purpose of their meeting unless there was some kind of tactical plan for the new Foreign Minister to break someone's balls.

It's an issue, although it was not an open issue amongst Kaczi.

- one of the first orders of the day of the new German coalition was to change the law on transsexuality (some technical stuff when one is recognized as what sex and the legal ties in marriage)

- the FDP, of which Westerwelle is chairman, wants to cut ties or at least funding with/for countries which don't respect gay rights

- as for lil' K.: His stance towards Germans and gays is an open secret. I wonder with which people he is troubled more and I wonder what must have crossed his mind when the new German foreign minister's first act in office was to come to Poland :) I wouldn't wonder though if next year's 'parada rownosci' might be a bit more exclusively populated by German politicians than before... :P
