I love it. Why? I enjoy play on words a lot, it's usually very dark, sarcastic, it plays on negative human emotions. In stead of trying to give you the good feeling, it aims at the negative aspects of life. Ridiculousness of it also plays a big role.

Love it! Why? Because it is highly abstract, dry / sarcastic - Monty Python, League of Gentlemen, Mitchell and Webb - this sort of stuff.
Plus here in Ulster, people have this dark self-deprecating sense of humour and this is what I really like - a healthy distance to themselves :)

That's the trouble with sarcasm, if you use too much of it you can say something and mean it, but people think you are being sarcastic.

No, it's a great topic, and one I would like to comment on seriously, (honestly).

yeah, that's what I like about English as a language, actually - the possibilities for making word puns are endless:)

"it's usually very dark,"

that doesn't appeal to me, I'm afraid

"sarcastic,"

love it too - they say there's no sarcasm without intelligence

"it plays on negative human emotions."

that it does for sure - doesn't it Warren? ;-p It can be dangerous though, as it is easy to cross the fine line and offend sb...

"In stead of trying to give you the good feeling, it aims at the negative aspects of life."

that's why often we see it more as complaining and not humour, really

"Ridiculousness of it also plays a big role."

yeah, I don't like Mr Bean, though - I find him stupid and not remotedly funnyGrazyna N. edytował(a) ten post dnia 19.02.08 o godzinie 15:58

I agree with you about Mr Bean.

You'll generally find with English/British people, if we don't like something we respond with sarcasm.

If the other person doesn't 'get' the sarcasm, it's only then we get angry.

First we just 'hint'.

But I don't think all British humour is 'dark'. Take Benny Hill for example.

Yeah, Mr Bean can be over the top. Benny Hill used to have some daft episodes too.

I like doing that to and here it's rpobably the only way to express your dislike about something since political correctness is a must....

that proves sarcasm is related to intelligence - if someone doesn't get it they don't see how smart the author of sarcasm is! ;-p

that's for super brainy, isn't it?! when they get the hint, they are saved the sarcasm.... hahaha

oh, he definitely is not 'dark', but I wouldn't necessarily call it an intelligent kind of humour....

I like shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks or Little Miss Jocelyn

I love Monty Python - completely absurd in some episodes but genius. However, one needs to subscribe to this kind of humour completely, otherwise there is no laugh at all. Tested and checked...

Fawlty Towers, The Office and all other Ricky Gervais productions - brilliant, witty and absolutely fantastic to watch.

Mr Bean is good too, I always loved Christmas parts - don't forget Mr Atkinson does other things too, which can be found on youtube. There is much more to see than Mr Bean there.

PS. Forgot about "Keeping Up Appearances" - don't know how exactly but this show makes me laugh every time I see Mrs Buquet on the screen :)Michal Rogowski edytował(a) ten post dnia 19.02.08 o godzinie 16:25

it's amusing to watch it, but would you, Rafal, find it funny if this charming devil splashed your beloved freshly washed motor with a bucket of best quality shit?

I would like to see your face then! ;-p

Grażyna, c'mon, how come that you didn't recognise who the Devil was? It was Ralph! Look at the photo - he just took off the Devil's robe here.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 19.02.08 o godzinie 17:00

only, I sort of can't imagine Rafal speaking with this clearly British accent!
I did, however, think there is a striking similarity between the two!:)

I liked Big Train when it was on.
Here is a sketch with which you can test your knowledge of English idioms

I also recommend the 'Child on bike' sketch which you'll find on Youtube. You have to watch to the very very end.

I like the humour in "Open All Hours" and "Yes,(Prime)Minister", but watched them quite a long time ago.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 19.02.08 o godzinie 18:20

I'll never forget Benny Hill in his luxurious blond wig, the greatest goaltender in the world.
