I haven't commented myself.

Besides which, Islam, and fundamentalist interpretations of Islam, are a religion rather than a race.

Someone making derogatory comments about the Catholic church is not necessarily attacking Poles.

I found the article yesterday and thought it was interesting and wanted to post it myself. Thanks Warren.
It's terrifying and immensely sad to think that so many young boys from our countries have been killed there only for us to find that the Taliban rules are being slowly restored. Poor women!

(To avoid any criticism, I am against the bloody war for 'democracy' there, but once it is going on I just hoped the country would soon be turning its face towards some better and more human world)

This article talks specifically about Shia men. It's nothing new that they are extremely strict and don't treat women equally. But there is no reason to get angry at everybody who is Islamic because the way they live varies from country to country or even from town to town. I have a friend who is Egyptian and she told me a lot about her religion and culture and it opened my eyes because I used to associate Islam with something negative. How stupid of me.

I don't know whether Shias are necessarily more strict than Sunnis.

The news item was about Shias in Afghanistan. The Taliban, however, are Sunni, as are the Muslim clerics who appear in the clips following the article.

As Aneta states, interpretation of Islam varies from country to country, and even from individual to individual.

Saudi Arabia has by far the strictest interpretation, but the nearby Gulf states are relatively liberal.

I think we should get off our high horse in the Western world. Other cultures have other answers to problems than we do. It might be different or abstract or wrong in our eyes. But they just see us in the very same way. We do wrong in their eyes! And the women's liberation is not that old in Europe and the States. And in many ways they are still not equal. Look only how many women in the States resign from work to become a house wife just after their first kid is born.
