Lienzos del Caribe opens at the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Washington DC
This Thursday, December 4, 2008, "Lienzos del Caribe", a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Elizabeth Conroy Benati, opens at the Andres Bello Hall at the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Washington, DC, with the participation of the curator, Clark Fox.
The artist, born in Northern Virginia, has been living and working in Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, for the last nine years. This exhibition is the result of her travels to several Caribbean islands, where she finds inspiration in the coming together of many different peoples and cultures.
The exhibit "Lienzos del Caribe" ("Paintings from the Caribbean") was first presented at the Francisco Narvaez Contemporary Art Museum in Porlamar, Isla de Margarita, in May 2008. "Elizabeth Conroy Benati brings us a one-person show that is concerned not only with aesthetics but also with linguistics and social realism," writes the Museums director, Arturo Millán. "As she portrays scenes from everyday life, always revealing a distinctive personality, her paintbrush recreates the rhythmic sinuosity of tropical colors. Her paintings both reflect and record the traditions of our rural populations, reluctant to abandon the pleasures of the simple life. Her works engage both the senses and the intellect. These paintings, charged with vibrant colors, illustrate a tangible reality...Elizabeth is an artist who has found her own style within a universal contrast," says Millán.
Elizabeth Conroy has found this experience unique. "I left Italy, where I had studied painting for many years, to enter a world where every sensation seems more intense. From the moment I got off the plane upon arriving at the island, I felt the warmth of the wind caressing my face- I hear laughter, and the rhythm of drums beating, tambores, salsa and merengue. Strong sunlight makes colors shimmer. At noon, in the tropics, the sun creates a strong contrast between light and shadow, and I see brilliant colors reflected within those shadows. In these paintings, I want to convey the intensity of these sensations, and to express the sentiments of the Venezuelan people, so marvelously interesting to me. I want to capture a moment illuminated by this tropical sun," the artist explains.
"Lienzos del Caribe" will run from December 4, 2008 to January 8, 2009, and will be open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
