Schneider is one of a growing number of politicians, including Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, who have announced their intention to have their apartments or houses made unrecognizable on the close-up Street View images, which Google's specially equipped cars have collected on major roads in 20 German cities.

And tagged: This is NOT where this minister is living? ;)

What would Orwell say to that?

Dear Bernd, in Poland we have strong divisions over problems that are not related directly to everyday life, economy of living, safety, choice of individuals.

Can it be that Germany is quite similar in the respect, that it is governed by "divide and rule", old Roman trick?

The idea is to find the issue that will polarise the society, find the way to first pages of newspapers, tops in the lists of news portals.

Google (Orwell? sic! Google brings pple and information together noone had ever sued google for using their private info), GM food (pple produce artificial food non existent in nature for centuries), immigrants (problem is in fact lack of immigrant policy), and so on - issues that polarise, divide people and bring in votes for those who voice artificial concersns, who instill fear in people.

On the other hand we have problems with transparency of financing parties, with transparency in public bid competitions for big contracts, ethical problems related to sales of arms to third countries (note the production of one rifle cartridge requires more money and effort and technology than the production of exclusive fountain pen). And the reforms. Was it not that governments which introduce painful but necessary reforms are hated and then the populist governments that instill irrational fear against reforms win easily the elections.

The Google issue is a case of populist fear instilling attempt at polarising people to find publicity, votes, and then control over the scared and misinformed people. There Orwell would have to say a lot.

I would say, look the politician carefuly in the eyes and look what he is doing with the hands. I would not be afraid much of what Google does.

PS> Were it for me, I have a WLAN called PENTAGRAM, it is secure but it appears in the list of everybody's PC's of the people who live nearby... If someone drives by and would like to check email and use my WLAN (via mobile phone or laptop)just to connect to internet (and not to my private discs) I would like to have a piece of software that allows him to do that without harming much my bandwidth. I know some technology enough to understand that my network is 100% secure, because it uses standard, very strong encryption. I suspect this is Google's intention. And there is software that allows users of smartphones to use free WLAN and log in to unsecured nodes automatically. Is it evil to share?Jacek K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 18.08.10 o godzinie 10:11

I lack knowledge of how politics are conducted in other countries. I know Germany quite well and Poland quite a bit and have some imagination about how things work in Britain, as much as I follow the BBC news and the internet.
The idea is to find the issue that will polarise the society, find the way to first pages of newspapers, tops in the lists of news portals.

And here we bring in another player diluting reality: The media. Can we divide the fog of distraction between them and politics? Sometimes media pick up on something by themselves, sometimes they fall for clever politicians, sometimes politicians push the agenda. It's a give and take situation, where both sides easily get what they want.
On the other hand we have problems with transparency of financing parties, with transparency in public bid competitions for big contracts, ethical problems related to sales of arms to third countries (note the production of one rifle cartridge requires more money and effort and technology than the production of exclusive fountain pen).

The German electoral system is so complicated that the party gathering most votes ends up with the lowest no. of seats. How am I supposed to explain this to my students?
Corruption and white-washing are general phenomena in any society, even the German one, although it's generally idealized by Poles very often. Just take Helmut Kohl's black accounts, the huge sums he spend/got/moved. Just like Marlon Brando in The Godfather he granted wishes in return for a favor.
And the reforms. Was it not that governments which introduce painful but necessary reforms are hated and then the populist governments that instill irrational fear against reforms win easily the elections.

Yes, although Germans are less hysterical as Poles. Many of the pleas towards the people by Father Rydzyk, populist politicians etc. simply wouldn't work in Germany. Others though would.
The Google issue is a case of populist fear instilling attempt at polarising people to find publicity, votes, and then control over the scared and misinformed people. There Orwell would have to say a lot.

Okay, yes. German are very, very concerned about their privacy and private information. My parents for example can't understand why the hell I am on facebook. That's dangerous to them or to my younger brothers too for that matter!
I would say, look the politician carefuly in the eyes and look what he is doing with the hands. I would not be afraid much of what Google does.

No, actually I like the American approach that information should be free, freedom of speech should be universal and knowledge should be shared. But as long as people will tinker with other people's private data there will be an issue and there will be social problems, eg. fake identities, terrorism, cyber-mobbing and such.

Yes, the division line is very strong.
And I tell you, it goes right across my family, many of my friends etc.
And it is a potent issue to use and controll people with. They stop discussing about issues that relates to them, (taxes, access to kindergartens, public health, bureaucracy they discuss about issues exploited by one politician or the other.

I lack knowledge of how politics are conducted in other countries. I know Germany quite well and Poland quite a bit and have some imagination about how things work in Britain, as much as I follow the BBC news and the internet.

Germany as well as Britain and US have a traditon of liberal media.
I follow National Public Radio and find it an example of public media to be copied as successful solution to Poland. Otherwise.... I found myself I am normal and can see and hear clearly after switching off TV and radio for at least a week. I am immediately becoming sensitive to real issues. Mindful.
Once I switch on the radio I am again in the meddle of artificial issues.
The idea is to find the issue that will polarise the society, find the way to first pages of newspapers, tops in the lists of news portals.

Sometimes media pick up on something by themselves, sometimes they fall for clever politicians, sometimes politicians push the agenda. It's a give and take situation, where both sides easily get what they want.

In my sessions of listening to NPR via internet I am amased how intelligently the news are designed, with a wise and independent commentary, insight in the source of issues and possible solutions, and the priority is assigned to particular news.... everyday trifles do not compete with serious stuff.

I think the problem is lack of serious model of public media, independent of advertising, viewability, capital investment, independent of the need for controversy. And this controversy, political marketing is skillfuly used to detract us from real issues. This is now called integrated marketing, it is cheap because once a controversy is created, it spreads via all channels of communication for free. I have no doubt that this is what Mr Palikot on one side and Mr Kurski on the other side of the barricade play with.

The German electoral system is so complicated that the party gathering most votes ends up with the lowest no. of seats. How am I supposed to explain this to my students?

Look how suddenly one-mandate electoral regions (i am not sure if it is a good translation) the method of voting for a person and not for a party, has become an non-issue. And most Polish people wanted it very much, because it would introduce more quality, more meritocracy in Polish politics. The issue is hushed now by all politicians in unison, regardless of the party.

Corruption and white-washing are general phenomena in any society, even the German one, although it's generally idealized by Poles very often. Just take Helmut Kohl's black accounts, the huge sums he spend/got/moved. Just like Marlon Brando in The Godfather he granted wishes in return for a favor.

Poland is one of the least transparent countries according to foreign consultancies as far as bid competitions are concerned. This is still an issue for 4 or 5 page of Wyborcza or Rzeczpospolita. Regardless of the political affiliation, as you can see. The first are crosses and feces.
Yes, although Germans are less hysterical as Poles. Many of the pleas towards the people by Father Rydzyk, populist politicians etc. simply wouldn't work in Germany. Others though would.

I envy Germany in that matter. Truly. We Poles are easy to polarise and hate each other. Why not divide our country into two according to the results of elections.

Okay, yes. German are very, very concerned about their privacy and private information. My parents for example can't understand why the hell I am on facebook. That's dangerous to them or to my younger brothers too for that matter!

I wonder if there is no corelation between concern over privacy and concern over GM food. For me both issues are well engineered to polarise, and there is very little firm knowledge available on the issues.

No, actually I like the American approach that information should be free, freedom of speech should be universal and knowledge should be shared. But as long as people will tinker with other people's private data there will be an issue and there will be social problems, eg. fake identities, terrorism, cyber-mobbing and such.

US is also a lawyers' country. Once Google is sued for any of the issues enumerated by you, it would be the end of Google.Jacek K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 18.08.10 o godzinie 14:22

You have discovered I am now enchanted with
Jon Kabat Zin and Mindfulness/Uważność. I am only a beginner :-)
I am very dependent now on this technique/teachings/therapy/philosophy of living. It involves: - non judging, - letting go - beginner's mind - trust (yourself) - acceptance, - non striving - patience... good stuff. I will be better one day I promise :-)))Jacek K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 18.08.10 o godzinie 18:40

From one of my favorites (as far as helping me to understand some differences I have experienced), C. Milosz. (2001), I think.

"The Polish word, uwaznosz appears as early as in the writings of Mikolaj Rej. So it is a good word for translating the English 'mindfulness,' which, according to Buddhists, encompasses all the teaching of Buddha. 'Mindfulness means a stance of attentive good will toward nature and people, so that we notice in every detail what is happening around us, instead of passing by in distraction.' Reading anthologoies of Buddhist poetry published in California, I see that mindfulness has been flourishing in poetry of the past couple of decades, and not only in poetry written by individuals who consider themselves Buddhists. A frame of mind that is the exact opposite of the customs of technological civilization, with its hurried tempo and instantaneous television flashes, certainly facilitates interest in preserving nature, because the mind turns to what is here and now..."

"...The crowing of roosters at the change in the weather: under a dark blue cloud the dark testicles of plums with their ash-grey coating and sticky cracks-there are sweet scabs of dirty amber." Janusz Szuber. :)

Me too, Jacek. I'm trying to observe the world mindfully. I'm not very good at it yet. NOT a Buddhist, it's a daily pleasure as well as a struggle. Btw easier thanks to circumstances.Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 20.08.10 o godzinie 20:59

Dear Bernd, Dear Joj, here is big brother's premises.
Can such Big Brother harm us if they invite such people to inspire their staff?

I am trying hard to connect mindfulness and Google Street View topic, with little success :-)))
