Temat: Nigerian scam 419 - is it possible to win this battle?

Whilst taking my car for an oil change in a small garage in Strasbourg in 1996 the guy asked me to the boss's office to help him understand a letter he'd received written in English. It was one of these scams though I'd never seen it before. I explained what was written and told him that I thought it must be something dishonest, though I was really surprised reading the letter.

Stan, when was the first recorded receipt of such a letter (telegraph,more-code,sheet of papyrus)?Steven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 08.06.08 o godzinie 19:10

If I was stuck in small-town West Africa, I'd be tempted too. But these are a pest and show sophisticated internet skills. Since they can't be stopped, the best solution is education and information, so even the most naive know to ignore them.

They are illegal under the Nigerian Criminal Code, but tracking down the perpetrators would be impossible.

A worse problem are the 'Boiler Room' investment companies, not generally connected to Africa.Jon M. edytował(a) ten post dnia 08.06.08 o godzinie 18:57

So called because originally in the US they rented basements to make a mini call centre. They sell junk bonds or commodities, usually to pensioners. The first shares they buy, for a small amount of money, make a fortune due to manipulating penny-share prices which is easy for a day or so. Then the old people part with their savings to buy even more investments and the boiler room mysteriously vanishes.

Started in US, now they happen in UK. Illegal in both countries. Maybe soon we'll see them in Poland.

I got fooled by the "Nigerian Scam" once.

Someone claiming to be a bank employee wrote me about a purported death of my cousin somewhere in the desert of Africa. On his death bed he wrote his last will indicating me as the next of kin to inherit a small fortune. I would never believe it if it wasn't for my family name being used.
I never dared to call the guy though. Lucky for me. I heard it all starts with small amounts of money being paid to "informer" who in the end talks you into investing a fortune to reclaim the "inheritance"Andrzej Dobrucki edytował(a) ten post dnia 09.06.08 o godzinie 08:44

Maybe you should say that in 'Active English' ;)

Did you mean 'sample' rather than 'simple'?
I hardly call it simple telling someone that for some contrived reason there is a fortune in a bank for them which a) they haven't inherited from family or friends b) they have done nothing to earn.

It it wildly far-fetched. What is simple is the person who believes it.

Friends recommend potencja.pl

About not doing business with Nigerians, I suspect this is true of many countries in the world. Large companies insist on irrevocable letters of credit etc.

I knew somebody rich and naive who lost a small fortune doing business with Russians back in 1990.

Shell did it recently and BP are having to throw value away in their ventures in Russia at the moment. Still, with the amount of oil there and the price of it at the moment people think that a little 'leakage' along the way is acceptable.

I think that a basic rule of thumb should be that if you are a nobody and somebody asks you to get involved in a business you have no experience in, then you should run a mile.

In the example of this supposed energy company, if they were so bloody marvellous they'd have banks or investors (such as Shell, Exxon, Technip, or whatever) throwing money and offers of collaboration at them, they wouldn't have to go around canvassing strangers for cash.

In the recent Woody Allen film, one of the two brothers wanted money to get involved with a hotel venture in Florida. In fact this line of the story didn't have time to evolve as the brother died. However, it was obviously a scam. Why would someone offer this guy involvement in a 'sure fire' venture in a market that he couldn't check?
BTW the brother ran a restaurant in London, so he hardly had any valuable experience to bring to it.

No. I tell ya, Keith looks nothing like himself in his GL photo. I'm still shivering.
