Profession - any type of work which needs special training or a particular skill, often one which is respected because it involves a high level of education
Occupation - a person's job
Job - the regular work which a person does to earn money
Vocation - a type of work that you feel you are suited to doing and to which you should give all your time and energy, or the feeling of suitability itself

to be made redundant / to be laid off - having lost your job because your employer no longer needs you
to be sacked – to be fired
to be short-listed – to be chosen from the long list of applicants
human resource department – people who interview and choose applicants
vacancy – lack of workers
