how much do you know about Polish educational system?
i've been through both Polish and American and believe me, the latter is far.. far limited.
Polish teachers just MAKE you learn initially useless things but then again, yeah, when you show ppl you know them or know more than other nations they will call you conceited. but being conceited also means not caring whatever names ppl use to call you so WHATever..

I've taught in various Polish higher educational institutions, and corrected numerous academic texts.

I can assure you that

(a) you are wrong

and

(b) your observations are not shared by non-Poles.
i've been through both Polish and American and believe me, the latter is far.. far limited.

So what can Poles do that Americans can't?

I'm genuinely interested.

How does all the extra effort put into 'learning' in Poland make Poland a better society than the U.S. in practical terms?

Perhaps you should learn the difference between 'saying' and 'showing'.

IMHO it's better to have a strong economy than a multitude of academically 'qualified' economists, to make good art and music than just talk about it, and to speak English well rather than have merely have a qualification that states that you can do so.craig bellamy edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.09 o godzinie 01:02

And, as an after-thought, I have heard all of the above so often it sends me into a coma.

It's not an opinion widely shared by foreigners who've had extensive contacts with Poles.

craig,

let me go back to my first post - "encyclopedical intelligence"

i never claimed Poland is better than any other country (look at the post here, are they more positive or negative?)
I am only saying we have a greater general knowledge about other countries than they do about us / about different, not important facts like knowing where Kazakhstan is on the map - it is probably not important for most of the people in their lives but, yeah, not many ppl know it, right?
example: i know more about the States than an AVERAGE American knows about Germany or France (I do not include Poland here, too often have I been asked about polar bears so there's no point..)

it's all about the population IN GENERAL.
i do not think MOST of my Polish friends are bitchy or proud but yes, there is a stereotype or it is true about Poles to SOME EXTENT only.. that's all.

c'est tout.

can you elaborate on this " I've taught in various Polish higer educational institutions, and corrected numerous academic texts." - what texts have you got in mind? history, biology, geography books? what?

True story:

During a History class in the States (High School, 10th grade) one of the students stood in front of the class and read from his homework. He was a young Brit who was in the states as an exchange student. After the class was over, one of the girls approached him and asked:
"Hey, where are you from? You have a cool accent"
"The UK" - he replied
"wow! You speak English very well" she answered...

Now, this doesn't mean that the entire nation is as ditsy... pretty much anywhere you go, you will encounter stupidity. Not one nation is better or worse and claiming so is preposterous.
I can assure you that the Polish educational system covers a lot more than what's available in the US. Is it better? One could argue the validity of such an argument, from my own perspective, I do appreciate the knowledge which I've gained... maybe not the stress related to cramming so much information into my cranium... but I do like the fact that I know where I am and why.

To compare - History in Poland [at least when I was here] started in the fourth grade alongside geography; biology in the fifth grade, physics and chemistry in sixth... vs. One year of world history in the 10th grade and two years of US history in the 11th and 12th grade... no geography and optional physics and chemistry... now is it necessary to know chemistry and physics? I didn't think so... but I did take it in the States, just so I know the names of chemical reactions, compounds etc etc... whuda thunk it!? It came in handy nearly 20 years later... am I a chemist or a physicist? Nope, but I can now discuss quantum physics and the chemical make up of the universe with some of my more advanced students who are bored to tears with - "A partner in one of New York's leading private banking firms went to Singapore to meet one of his clients. In Singapore..." you get the idea... not that "Business Across Cultures" is a bad book... but breaking the monotony of the usual class work could be so rewarding sometimes, don't you think?

Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

The German educational system is supposed to prepare the pupils to be able to think by themselves and to be autonomous. Interestingly these are qualities which are not sought-after later. ;) Bummer! :))

Academic papers in English. Usually their scientific or medical texts, but sometimes ones on literature and art.

I'm not really qualified to comment on the excellence or otherwise of the scientific or medical texts I've proof-read as I'm neither a scientist nor a doctor, but I'd say the quality of what was produced in the more literary works by highly qualified people was piss-poor.

Generally the authors of such papers use a multitude of long words to say nothing of any great significance or value, and their output comes across to an educated native as little more than a pastiche of pretentious pseudo-intellectual platitudes.craig bellamy edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.09 o godzinie 01:59

I agree, but can you judge someone's intelligence by the way they convey their thoughts in a foreign language? Do you speak Polish Craig and if so, how well?
