Temat: The world of our parents and grandparents..

They lived in such different times, in the past 20 years alone the world has changed so dramatically... it makes me wonder what was it like for parents of people in other countries to live through the war and rebuilding...

Temat: The world of our parents and grandparents..

I used to run some IT trainings for elderly people who were attendants of the so called Third Age University. I must admit I was wondering and even afraid how would they cope with keyboard typing, scrolling mouses, sending e-mails, etc. To my surprise, they did really good! It's not the young age that makes people proficient in new technologies, as we often think. It's the openness of mind and appetite for knowledge. There's no better group for that type of training I could imagine.

My grandmother died last year.

She was 94.

Her world must have changed out of all recognition during her lifetime.

She told me she had never seen a black person until she was in her twenties.

She didn't know what homosexuals were until my grandfather told her after she got married.

My grandad was a real old school 'Brit'. He had been a sereant-major during the war, and behaved like Basil Fawlty in the presence of Germans, doing Nazi salutes behind their backs. He would refuse to eat any food he considered 'foreign', such as spaghetti.

Reading the local newspaper from the Isle of Wight, occasionally in the obituary section, when an old lady had died, it stated that they had never been on the mainland. It is only about 4km by sea to get to the mainland, and the journey takes about 15 minutes by highspeed catamaran.

To be honest, however, I think the U.K. was a better place in their lifetimes than it is now.

One of the guys I work with is an older gentleman from deep south. We too had to teach him how to use the mouse, copy & paste and pretty much everything that there is to know about basic use of PC. Due to his age and his previous "experience" he now is my boss.

Raf, are you bitter about it? I reckon that, on top of his experience, the guy is now able to operate the computer, which should be regarded as an achievement. Unless he isn't a good boss either

Not bitter, but his "experience" has absolutely nothing with what we do now either, I was being sarcastic.
