I've watched the film recently again.What a tragic lifelike story. Unhappy people breed unhappy kids.
With the lapse of time, I'm starting to understand Mrs Robinson more than before and identify with her rather with her rather innocent and silly daughter.

The controversy:Well, Iris is very much a 'holier than thou' person.
She has made comments about gays being 'worse than paedophiles'.
She also stated that had she been Bill Clinton's wife she would never have forgiven him.
The party she belongs to is very much evangelical Protestant.
So there is a lot of merriment at the thought of her being caught with her knickers down.
Furthermore, her choice of sex partner was very odd. He was still a teenager at the time, and forty years her junior. Young enough to be her grandchild.
As an MP, she is not an unimportant person. Her husband is the most powerful politician in Northern Ireland.
But as well as the more 'salacious' aspects to the case, there is more than a hint of corruption. She set up her boyfriend in business, possibly by abusing her public office to secure funding and planning permission for him.
If you knew about Iris Robinson, and the kind of people she represents, you might find this possibly the funniest political scandal ever.

Well, it's the typical mixture of hypocrisy, compassion and tabloid hype. Yes, she had an affair, tried to commit suicide, her husband seems to have forgiven her but the whole thing starts to backfire at him for no good reason. Granted, she has paid her beau a few grand to start up a cafe of some sort and this has some taxing implications for the Robinsons as a couple. This in turn has caused some shit-stirring in Stormont and the righteous, born-again, God-loving, sheep-shagging Norn Irish will be appalled at the sheer scale of French-like affair :)Marcin B. edytował(a) ten post dnia 08.01.10 o godzinie 12:41

Yeah, almost as funny as genital herpes in a convent. The same scale of scandal too.

If she was a man she would be in equal trouble.
Furthermore, the stories of her mental health problems and attempted suicide strike me as typical female manoevres to elicit sympathy.
I am interested in the male/female aspect to this.
I find, for example, Bill Clinton's behaviour more understandable than that of Iris.
I had thought risking everything for casual sex with a much younger partner to be a typical 'man' thing to do.
