Temat: Germany bans new Rammstein-CD

Rammstein's latest album, "Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da" has been 'indexed' as it is commonly referred to in Germany, meaning that the album cannot be sold to minors and cannot be stocked on store shelves. The album will now only be made available for purchase behind the counter at shops that still carry the album.

An expert commission decides either to ban media, to censor it or not. It consists amongst others out of priests and bureaucrats.


- Isn't artistic freedom a stronger right than the protection of youth?

- Why have things to be banned or forbidden or censored because it's unfit for minors? (What about cars, guns, alcohol, etc?)

- Why do courts have to decide what is art and what is not?

The ways censorship is used are varied. For instance through dubbing of movies. Words and comparisons with Nazi-vocabulary are generally filtered out of movies, sit-coms and other dubbed media.
Something I first learned when I came to Poland and started seeing movies in their original version for the very first time in my life.
Since Germans are big in funding of movies, many studios prepare a special German version for the cinema with different scenes. Usually the movies are a bit shorter. In German TV-guides you are always given the original min. and the tv-min. Aso. asf.

I must admit that in my youth I used to find German dubbing everywhere so annoying that I could not watch any films on Satellite TV :)
I was wondering why do they dub everything, it does not do film any justice, not that polish readers in films are as pathetic as dubbing, well maybe a little bit less ;)
Why do they not keep the original and subtitle everything, they would kill two birds with one stone, people would learn the language and learn to read in their own native language :)

I was shocked when I first saw 'Tom and Jerry' in English. The German version is completely different. Jerry 'thinks' out loud and this in rhymes!!! Talk about annoying and weird, eh? ;)

I guess for the same reasons as in Poland: One is used to it. You can't even find a cinema in Germany where they show 'originals'. It's like looking for the pin in the haystack.

Public decrees about decency are probably important in specific environments, e.g., when exhibitions are publicly funded or publicly displayed in unsolicited ways, but not to stomp on commercial material or privately exchanged expressions. As far as I know we have parental warning stamps on the CDs here but I don't know about bans.

...and now it's settled. I'm old and out-of-touch. I don't know "Rammstein."

B., you know which way the wind is blowing there. Is censorship changing there?

Anyway, all in all, i'm not against such bans - if you are a fan, you''ll buy the album anyway. If not, you loose nothing.

Me too! I wonder if they still exist in Germany or if it's already and only dominated by Gummibaerchen and Jelly Beans ;)
As far as I know we have parental warning stamps on the CDs here but I don't know about bans.

The industry applies such age-stamps in Germany 'freely'. Meaning that there is no law to make them do it, but if they wouldn't there would be one quickly. It was a compromise years ago.

It's better than it was. But there are still those kind of Germans out there who think: If I don't like it, it has to be forbidden. And then the apparatus helps them. As it was with Rammstein probably...
It's a mixed problem of the order-mindset of some people and the bureaucracy in it's non-flexibility.

Anyway, it's like with Madonna's gig here, the whole thing only attracted more people.

Thanks to that ban they will only sell more CD's.

PS: They didn't whine (depending on what's whining for you), they said in an interview that they were surprised and didn't expect such small-mindedness. A claim to ban their whole back-catalog due to lyrics and such was unsuccessful just some months ago.

Lol, indeed, what a narrow-mindness and restrictive law. It can be only compared to gagging of Copernicus and Galileo.
They want to destroy them becouse they don't understand what Rammstein sings about. The message of Rammstein is too ahead of our times for them to understand. :D

Actually, if you have a look at the lyrics and the reason for the ban, it's quite funny:

For instance:
"You have a pussy, I have a dick, so what's the problem, let's do it quick."

Apart from sharing the taste of the musician, I just can't see the call for having unprotected sex in this song. Not in the lyrics, in the video maybe. But just because you can't see no rubber on them, that doesn't force me to do the same. Or does it?

How come Germans, the land of 'poets and thinkers' (as it's often referred to), can't distinguish between the lyrical I and the real I??

What are those experts deciding about art or art-forms? Anyone studied? Hm?
Anyone having an idea about discrimination or dialectic? Hm? I'll take their pay, I'll dot their job. Gladly ;)

So the latest facts:

- our female minister of families applied for the ban after the release of the album
- it was then checked and decided shortly after:
- that the song 'I will hurt you' and one artwork picture were promoting S/M practices and are therefore not fit for minors
- thus the CD can't be sold to minors or advertised in any way

- the band will release a new CD without the song and the banned picture on 14. November

- btw, S/M-clothes and -utensils can be bought freely in any sex-shop in Germany, many have them on display in their windows
- prostitution and Dominas are legal, so are clubs were such practices are offered

And:
- that the (porn)video to 'Pussy' and it's (pornographic)lyrics were available for promotional purposes before the release and still are, is no bother
- neither are the other lyrics, fi. about Fritzl and incest...
