I'm a member of Couch Surfing (http://www.couchsurfing.com/ ) and the Hospitality Club (http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ ), organisations which aim at creating a network of people happy to have someone stay overnight at their place when the need be. This means reduced cost of travelling and visiting different parts of the world as well as meeting new people and making the most of your time.

What do you think of this idea? Would you consider yourself joining a similar network?

Of course, this isn't meant as eliciting any declarations from you, I'm just asking of your opinion (although if someone did offer a couch, that would be nice ;).

I just thought this might be a relevant thread considering the coming summer holidays ;)Sylwia Łubkowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 01.06.08 o godzinie 10:26

I have been doing something similar for quite some time now, pretty much having different artists, musicians and travelers stay with me. Once my kids were born we stopped almost completely having people stay with us, but before, it was a pretty much an open invite. It's a large network of people from pretty much every country world wide. Involved in similar music and focused on almost identical ideas. It's a bit more complicated than that... I am a bit oversimplifying the entire process, but I love it, enjoyed it very much. New people, new faces, new ideas... great stuff.

I used to do a similar thing, mainly for friends and firnds of friends when I moved to katowice, since I used to live in a spot that was quite attractive for getting to the park, concerts, and the city center. Don't do it now, but will occasionally host someone overnight, but they have to be a girl :)))
When we lived in a downtown area of Austin, we had friends over most weekends and after a while I got sick and tired of it: they wouldn't bother being nice as the only reason they came would be for the proximity of the 6th Street. We then agreed to move to a condo in a quiet residential area.
I sometimes stay over at my friends, especially when flying from Warsaw. There's a girl I met through a newsgroup and we've known each other for ages since then, and when she lived downtown Warsaw, she'd invite me every time I was going there. I don;t mind staying in a hotel though, as sometimes it's more convenient for me and gives me more privacy etc.

I've only been a member for a year and managed to put up two people so far and showed around Olsztyn a couple more. The main traps are single men travelling (I agree here with Tatiana - I'm adventurous but only to a point) and wrong time of visit - when I'm swamped with work I would hardly want anyone to disturb me. However, when the summer approaches and I'm about to face 'sezon ogórkowy', I'm free to host people at mine ;)

Oh. c'mon. Give it a break! Are single women travelling any safer?? ;-)

Accidentaly I was at a meeting of Couch Surfing a couple weeks ago as my friend is very much involved in that project. She uses it when travelling abroad a lot.

Meeting them was interesting, a bit like a group of people from some internet community meeting for the first time. So many nationalities and very friendly. If you like travelling it's definitely worth having a closer look.

(I'm too lazy to travel like that)

I think so - it's psychological. I mean, nothing guarantees that a single woman won't try to do something funny while at your place (like stealing, for instance), but the idea of hosting a single woman puts me more at ease (assuming I don't know her). The rule of thumb is to go to their profile and check it out - if there's anything you don't quite like about them, you are not obliged to host them. Having said that, I don't want to have a negative or suspicious attitude towards my prospective guests, and this is not to say I'd never accept a single male traveller. It really depends on lots of things.Sylwia Łubkowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 01.06.08 o godzinie 18:21

Probably not as you might find yourself waking up in the morning to understand she's moved in for good, with her collection of fluffy animals. ;)

Has anyone any funny anecdotes about accidentally being at a specific type of meeting? My typically male mind is going in a certain direction, but let's face it it could be any kind of subject (Christians, snake lovers, etc.)
If yes, maybe a new thread.

How does it work for payment? Do you just stay for free, working on the assumption that in the big scheme of things everyone gets something out? Do you buy a present, buy groceries....?

hehe, yes, Steven, it was like a sect to me ;)

I wouldn't want to be a part of a cult-like organisation and I've always declined organised events put forth by CS or HC. I don't think I'd have the patience to be such an involved member. I only give as much as I can honestly do and I expect the same from others. But if you think of so many great places you've never been to simply because you didn't have anyone there, like a friend or a relative, to keep you company. Hotels are good solutions sometimes, they provide the sense of privacy and independence but they're very impersonal and what's the fun of doing Krakow on your own anyway?

Sylwia, you're always welcome to stay at my place - provided that you don't take off your shoes.... :)

I started thinking about a British sit-com where this middle-aged couple ended up at a swingers' party. (try Wikipedia if you aren't sure).

I vaguely remember that in another episode they thought that they had been invited to a party by a woman, but when they arrived the hostess announced to all the guests that 'Victor and Margaret' would be serving the dinner.
The problem was that Margaret had told the lady that her mother was in Kettering, and they lady had thought that she had said 'catering'.

The series, 'One Foot in the Grave' did have more varied storylines than misunderstandings about meetings though.
