Well, there were 4500+ German Polish marriages in 2007. The numbers were rising so for 2008 they ought to be somewhat higher.Nr.2 are German Vietnamese marriages.
Then you could count all those unmarried relationships.
I'd say it depends on why the relationship came to life.
If a Polish women (as a more usual case) is not interested in Polish men (who'd blame her) and thus looking for a foreigner, that's fine. But if she's (let's stick with that as an example though it sure works both or any ways) doing it because she's seeking social security, luxury, money; if she wants to show of with a German or English boyfriend/husband in her Eastern Polish shit-hole "wies" it's doomed to fail.
In short: It's a good idea if it's love. It's a better idea if the chemistry works. It's the best if it's love, chemistry and the will to work together (as a team).
IMHO at least :P

So... is anybody clever enough to provide Warren, among others, with any advice on coping with nationality/cultural differences?Very often a different approach to "life" results from family standards. It could be more important than the nationality (though still the language issue...).
My "zen" friend keeps telling me that those who have no problems assimilating with other cultures or tending to change the place of living quite often are the so called young souls (reincarnation matters, etc.). He accepts people and their souls as they are.
You must be an old soul, Warren. I`m not sure if, in your case, being aware of it helps.

I remember we once had a discussion on the language thing, and someone said they didn't care as long as they were more or less able to communicate. I can't imagine a relationship with someone whose native language I barely know, and vice versa. Unless I was a dog. Sniffing is so straightforward.

My observations: these mixed marriages work. when I studied in Germany, Polish friend of mine met Spanish student. they fell in love. they've been married for 4 years. I love to watch them, they seem to be so so happy! (and they mix 3 languages when talking :-D)I dated German student and we didn't see any cultural differences.
In my son's class, there are some children from mixed marriages: Irish Turkish, Polish Indian, Polish English and these white black mixtures. as far as I'm concerned it works!
Once my black collegue said in Polish: "ja mówię po polsku i mam na imię Franek". I started to laugh and answered sth like "Ok and you know dzień dobry and jak się masz and that's it". "nie, nie, nie, ja mówię po polsku". he told me his partner was Polish. they have been together for 4 years. He loves visiting Poland and he started learing Polish because he wanted to communicate with her Polish family.
I hasn't observed any cultural differences in relationships I've known. as Tatiana said somewhere above these differences could be rather personal...

Who wouldn't? :)
But for how long this can carry a relationship? Changing over the years with experiences? Decisions, responsibilities, work, shopping, every-day life stuff wont work in a relationship where there is only love. That's romantic idealism. Nice and cute and for sure necessary and welcome though not enough for two humans living, breathing, growing together. IMHO :)

yes, of course, but the most important thing is if you point them all the time or you try to understand, tolerate and accept them. and when the relationship comes to the end the cultural differences shouldn't be blamed for.
