This is interesting. It so happens that an Australian friend spent most of a two-hour ride explaining some cricket rules to me. I didn't get it. I guess I have to see it or do it.(I always wondered how fast these balls are as compared to baseball "pitches"). Also, I knew about wickets but I've never seen examples of batters missing balls...always some other plays.
Thanks. It's a good tutorial. I might like to try it while I can still stand up straight.
I know what innings are, I know what runs are. I think that's all I know.

I'll show you.
Cricket can be dangerous.
Sometimes a fast bowler aims at the batsman's head rather than the wicket, and may cause serious injury.
Also, I knew about wickets but I've never seen examples of batters missing balls...always some other plays.
Of course, a batsman missing, or simply letting a ball go is not great viewing, therefore you won't see it on the T.V. highlights.
Cricket can be excuciatingly boring. One of the main differences with baseball is that the batsman can play indefinitely. The bowling side have to get him out.
Therefore a competent batsman can do nothing for hours on end, and merely fend off the bowlers attack.
In a way, however, this makes the game more interesting. A wicket is something to celebrate, as it is difficult to achieve against a top-class batsman. lbw (leg before wicket).If the umpire believes the ball would have hit the wicket, but was blocked by the batsman's leg, he can be ruled 'out'.
The rules about this are extremely complicated btw.

The style of bowling aimed at the batsman rather than the wicket was first tried on the England tour of Australia in the 1920's.It was regarded as 'ungentlemanly' and nearly caused a break in diplomatic relations with Australia.

If I can relate the terminiology to our baseball terms I would have it half licked. I'm starting to get it. Thanks.Our bowler/pitchers throw at guys to either back them off, intimidate them, or for revenge for a lot of scoring ("hit THIS"). lot on him. I wonder to myself all the time "if you're trying to hurt me, then why don't you walk up to me here and try to hurt me?" But it's part of the game and who am I, after all. It is "ungentlemanly." I might use that in person. You would be able to hear a pin drop. :)
btw a lot of kids get turned off from baseball too after they get drilled in the lip or head or whatever.

Got it (I think).Okay. Now the batter makes contact...these fielders "dismiss the batsman" by catching it? (Then I assume guys running to score have to get back and do their own thing).
