Temat: PNG PM welcomes China's role in South Pacific

PORT MORESBY, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Papua New Guinean Prime Minister Michael Somare on Friday praised China's role in the South Pacific.

He told visiting Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan at a meeting here that PNG, which is the chair of the 16-member Pacific Islands Forum, welcomes China's assistance to the economic development in the region.
On bilateral relations, he pointed out that the two countries have expanded their bilateral exchanges ever since they established diplomatic relations in October 1976. Zeng's visit is a manifestation of China's support to PNG's pursuit of sustainable development, he said.
Somare said Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and his government sticks firmly to the One China policy.
The prime minister expressed the hope that two countries will strengthen their cooperation in areas of mining, oil and gas, fishery and forestry.
Zeng echoed Somare's comment on the bilateral relations, saying the two countries share similar or identical views on many international and regional issues.
He expressed appreciation over PNG's One China policy and its opposition to "Taiwan's independence."
Zeng said China will encourage competitive Chinese enterprises to invest in PNG and in the meantime facilitate PNG's entry to China's market.
Zeng arrived here earlier on Friday on the last leg of his four- nation tour to the South Pacific, which has brought him to Australia, New Zealand and Vanuatu.
