If you ever had the experience of opening a book at random, reading the first paragraph, and then finding yourself having wasted the entire weekend finishing it, then you know the trap of being sucked in by a great book. A carefully planned weekend goes out the window, with the creation of another mind taking over your conscience and keeping you in a state of suspense until 4am the next morning. A skillful novelist can capture and control your mind, keeping your imagination on the edge of its seat.

“Powrót Wilka” is such a captivating story that sucks you in for 12 hours of non-stop reading. Tomaszewski is a master of plot build up and character description. Set in modern day Poland, the story follows title character Wilk who returns to his homeland after two decades of absence for a dinner reunion with some old friends. Having left his friends behind the Iron Curtain, he now discovers some details of his past that recasts his youth in a new light . After just the first paragraph you find yourself drawn into his story, compelled in the search for answers only to find the mysteries deepen. As you race ahead the suspense builds, ultimately delivering an astonishing answer that makes the sleep deprivation and wasted weekend all worth it. Channeling David Baldacci or Dean Koontz, Tomaszewski has crafted a superbly written and tantalizingly suspenseful story set in Poland two decades years after collapse of the Iton Curtain. Born in Sopot and educated in Gdynia and Gdańsk, this book took me back to my younger years and made me feel as though I was right there with them. I enjoyed reading it straight through to its very unexpected finale. Speaking Polish helps a little too.
