Tutaj jeszcze dodatkowe informacje nt. zmiany licencjonowania:
Zmiany, które następują w licencjonowaniu SUSE Linuxa są następujące:
- Zostaje wprowadzony podział na subskrypcje dla instalacji na serwerach fizycznych oraz dla instalacji jako serwer wirtualny
- Liczymy ilość rdzeni (core) w serwerze i w zależności od tego na taką ilość zamawiamy dla klienta subskrypcję
- Dodatkowo zostały wprowadzone subskrypcje 5 letnie (do tej pory były tylko 1 i 3 letnie)
Zmiana następuję od 1 sierpnia 2012 r.
Poniżej pytania i odpowiedzi dotyczące zmian:
What is the effective date for the pricing change?
August 1, 2012
How about existing contract and subscriptions?
We will honor existing contracts and subscriptions. The new pricing will be in place with the renewal.
What about existing quotes?
We honor quotes done before the effective change for a maximum of 60 days.
Can the 2012 pricing be used before the effective date?
Yes, starting with the availability on the VLA list the new pricing can be used for quotes even before August 1, 2012.
Will the quote tool work with the new rates?
Yes, on and after August 1, 2012. The tool reads values off the pricing database. It will run whatever values are preloaded and current. It will switch automatically and get the new pricing values.
Can a customer secure current pricing?
Yes, by ordering before the new pricing becomes effective in August.
My customer has a valid contract and would like to add subscriptions - what price is used?
After August 1, 2012 additional subscriptions are only available with the 2012 pricing, if the contract does not contain a price protection clause or on call subscriptions.
My customer want to upgrade hardware (e.g. from a 2 socket to a 4 socket machine) - what's the next step?
If the machine is covered by a subscription purchased under the old pricing model the sockets are not counted. If the machine is covered by a subscription purchased under the 2012 pricing model the machine must be upgraded by an upgrade order.
How can a customer upgrade?
An upgrade is available in cases of moving to a higher subscription level or increasing the number of sockets. An upgrade order give credits to the remaining duration of a subscription for a new order at the appropriate level. No downgrades are possible.
Can a customer downgrade?
No, downgrades are not needed and not available. Customer is open to run a 4-socket subscription on a 2-socket system for example.
If a customer has VMWare cluster of 10, and only run SLES on three of those at a time - do we tell them they need only three subscriptions? If one of these systems fails over to another node in the cluster, we consider that they will still only require the three subscriptions?
Yes, the new model still need only 3 subscriptions (the unlimited virtual one for all sockets in the physicial system). In case of a bigger VMware cluster the customer must segment it to get a segment of (in this case) three servers.
Else, it might be that the automatic load balancing or vmware HA moves a system to a not entitled server outside of the three - it will work but they are not legally entitled any more.
How do we audit the number of sockets a customer uses?
The SCC will have the capabilities to count the number of sockets. Till then we will use the same method we use today for auditing, by asking the customer to give us a statement of used products.
Does MLA pricing protection apply to SUSE pricing model 2012 change?
Price protection does not apply as the old SKUs are not available any more. MLA customer must order using the new SKUs.
Legal view is that price protection does only apply as long as the offering is on the price list. By the model change the old SKUs are retired and not available any more.
Is it possible to aggregate subscriptions (eg. use two 2-socket subscriptions for a 4-socket system)?
No, the subscription must match the hardware.
Is it possible to pool subscriptions (eg. run two 2-socket machines with one 4-socket subscription)?
No, pooling is not supported at this point.
Does a physical subscription allow virtual machines on top?
No, as soon as virtualization is involved a virtual subscription is needed.
Do we offer subscriptions for more than 8 sockets?
This was not requested by any hardware vendor so far.
When is virtual or physical appropriate?
Virtual means any type of virtualization is involved, means SLES as a host for virtual guest, independent of the number of guests, or SLES as a virtual guest.
Physical are all other scenarios where no virtualization is involved.
Considered as virtualization are all versions of hypervisor, xen, kvm, virtual box, vmware, hyper V etc. The SLES 11 SP2 provided container technology is not considered as virtualization.
I only see USD prices in the PA, where are EUR and other currencies?
The spreadsheets attached to the PAs contain all currencies where a change applies, the displayed currency can be changed using the drop down menu inside the spread sheet on the top left corner.
Do we differentiate between active/populated and available/unpopulated sockets?
The number of available sockets matter, independent whether a CPU is available or not.
Do we support early renews for price protection?
In general renewals are possible during the renewal window, which starts 120 days before termination of the subscription.
Customers might order at the old model and price till Jul 31st to get some price protection. However, the remaining subscription time will not be credited and the customer might be oversubscribed for the time in between the old subscriptions are terminated.
