Is it possible to deinstall/remove a specific component from already installed Oracle Database Home using OUI? [ID 888934.1]
The following sections describe the possibility based on the version of the Oracle Database software:
Oracle Database Home: "9.2.0.x, 10.1.0.x and 10.2.0.x"
If a user wants to remove the component installed in the Oracle Database Home, OUI allows the user to select a specific component for deinstall/remove from the already installed Oracle Database Home. In Oracle Database Home versions 9.2.0.x, 10.1.0.x and 10.2.0.x, it is possible to deinstall a specific component from Oracle Database Home using "OUI -> Deinstall".
Oracle Database Home: 11gR1 (11.1.0.x)
In 11gR1 (11.1.0.x), a user can remove/deinstall a specific component from already installed Oracle Database 11gR1 Home (using OUI), only when home version is at 11.1.0.6 (i.e 11gR1 base version). That means, only "11gR1 base version (11.1.0.6)" allows the user to perform deinstallation of a specific component using "OUI -> Deinstall". Once the patchset (i.e 11.1.0.7) is installed, it is not possible to deinstall/remove a component from already installed "11.1.0.7 Oracle Database Home". This is a new change with Oracle Database 11gR1 patchset 1 (i.e 11.1.0.7) onwards.
When deinstall/removal of a specific component is not possible using OUI:
If user does not have control on removing a specific component from an already installed Oracle Database Home (ex: "11.1.0.7"), user can enable/disable the specific component functionality at the binary level. For example, if user does not want to use "Partitioning" option from the Oracle Database Home, where Partitioning component is already installed, then user can switch off the Partitioning component functionality at the binary level using the following steps:
1. Shutdown all database instance(s)/service(s) running from the Oracle Database Home
2. Run the following relink command to disable the partitioning option at the binary level:
% cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
% make -f ins_rdbms.mk part_off ioracle
3. Restart the database instance(s) and ensure that "Partitioning" option is turned off i.e FALSE in v$option:
SQL> select * from v$option where parameter='Partitioning';
Note: Removing the partitioning option will not affect the existing partitioned tables owned by default to SYSTEM and SYS users
Note :
The following are a few of the component options that can be controlled (switch ON or OFF) at the binary level.
Component/Option Enable Disable
Partitioning part_on part_off
Datamining dm_on dm_off
OLAP olap_on olap_off
Data Vault dv_on dv_off
Real Application Testing rat_on rat_off
Oracle Label Security lbac_on lbac_off
Real Application Cluster rac_on rac_off
Oracle Database Vault dv_on dv_off
Automatic Storage Mgt asm_on asm_off
Context Management Text ctx_on ctx_off
