Indian fashion feast attracts talents, buyers

NEW DELHI, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Known for fancy dresses and pretty faces, India's leading fashion show Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLFW) kicked off here Wednesday, attracting talents and buyers at home and abroad.
A record high number of 87 Indian designers have been present at this year's fashion week and 42 fashion shows will be on in next five days, according to Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) , the organizer of the event.
Resembling the country's booming status in global economy, Indian fashion industry and designers were also attracting more and more international attention.
The WLFW has received 80 foreign buyers from 19 countries and regions, including France, Japan, Britain, Hong Kong and the United States, while the domestic buyers totaled about 100, the FDCI said.
"We are proud that WIFW is being recognized internationally and through this we are gathering support for our member designers to showcase their talent abroad," said Rathi Vinay Jha, director general of FDCI.
Not only planning dazzling catwalk shows, local designers also set up around 120 stalls to display their works and meet buyers.
Many of local designers have tried really hard to blend the modern fashion with Indian tradition. Some gave new look to traditional Indian saris and others borrowed Indian elements into western clothes.
"I have always been inspired by my own culture," said Malini Ramani, young female designer who made the opening show of the fashion week Wednesday."You can see it everywhere in my design."
She enhanced her elegant evening dresses, skirts and short jackets by shinning silver and golden embroideries, which were visually Indian.
"In fact I think being Indian is one of the reasons I become designer. There are so many that can be borrowed from our culture heritage," Ramani said.
