Temat: The Swine Flu
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE53N22820...The WHO says the virus from 12 of the Mexican patients is genetically the same as a new strain of swine flu, designated H1N1, seen in eight people in California and Texas. All of the eight later recovered.
An emergency committee of WHO experts, convening on Saturday, will advise Chan on issues including possibly changing the WHO's pandemic alert level, currently at 3 on a scale of 1 to 6.
"We do not yet have a complete picture of the epidemiology or the risk, including possible spread beyond the currently affected areas," Chan said, adding the situation was seen as "serious."
I wonder how many different kinds of flu are now going to appear. I have a feeling that viruses now get more vicious; the things my son brings from kindergarten have already made me very sick a few times and I don't remember people getting so sick when I was a kid.
Do you think we're experiencing the beginning of a new pandemic?

Depends.Southern Europe uses significantly more anti-biotics, so do the US. The least use Germany, the Netherlands.
Then we have all the pesticides, genetic manipulated crop and mono-cultural breeding/growing.
Mix it with a bit of chemical research and a nutty professor and yes, we might face for sure some new shit heading our way.
Or something.

It's disconcerting, these multi-strain bullshit things are hard. Swine seems to respond to something we have in huge stockpiles, though, and I still remember that 1978 time when more people passed away thanks to the vaccine than the syndrome.

It didn't work for the swine flu, did it?---
What worries me is that we get all those nasty viruses that actually transfer themselves from human to human. Scary. Now it won't be enough to slaughter and burn all swine.

The WHO raised the level to 4. One before pandemony. Nice. Now we just have to wait for enough assholes getting sick on planes because they have to close important business deals or so desperately want to see their family again so that we can all share the excitement of a terminal sickness. Or something. And don't tell me I'm wrong, I watched 'Outbreak' about ten times!

After the "potentially-really-serious-pneumonia-that-we-had-no-better-name-for-so-we-coined-that-ominous-sounding-name" aka SARS or avian flu I need to see 6 figure numbers to start worrying. Otherwise these outbreaks will remain more of a curiosity than a threat. Obviously the TV will make it look like Armageddon.
To be honest, that whole hype could easily be turned into a smashing South Park episode.
Today's comment in Nature - from a concerned reader in Denmark :)
"I hope you agree! For a serious pandemonia to occour, you need three things: High mortality, easily transmissionable and long incubation time. [...] Maybe ther's a great risk of a pandemonia, but are we just gonna roll over and hope not to die?! Klaus Laursen"

Now, this is brilliant! I'm sure there is a risk of pandemonia given the fact that 2012 is approaching...
