Temat: Józef Klemens Piłsudski

A pretty controversial figure in Polish history. How do you see him and why?

I remember he's name to be taboo in school, meanwhile I grew up with his portrait in our household. Recently there was a TV special where he was widely discussed, I can't say that I fully understand reasons for him to be personified as a negative character in our history.

Hitler liked him, idealized him and attended his funeral. That says something about his charisma. (Yes, it wasn't mutual, I know.)

His person and the statues everywhere remind me a bit of Franco or Ludendorff, maybe even a little Napoleon. But then again, all kinds of military guys can be somehow thrown in one bag...

To maybe compare him to Bismarck would be more precise: Strict, not a big reformer but a consolidator, re-arranger, etc.
Nonetheless I don't appreciate military guys and whatever achievements they introduced anywhere...

Well, for me he's rather positive but with a big burden of controversion. Undoubtly he was a man of great charisma and great courage but also uncompromising or maybe even ruthless.

For me, the worst stain on his picture is that he was in this socialists' party, but maybe it was a feature of that time...
