Some schools in Warsaw already cut salaries. It's below or at the same rate as ten years ago. The reason for that was the 'crisis'.With this I bet the schools will cut even more on teacher salaries.
From a once profitable to an okay job it might become the laughing stock of work-life.
Why doesn't the government take a leap at the flat owners who don't pay taxes on the rent they get? I guess schools are an easier target?
I wonder which party will emerge and win the next elections...
Temat: Language schools to pay VAT:
It's not the "crisis" Bernd, it's the fact that there are more and more teachers (especially English teachers) on the market, so most schools will use the students who agree to work for peanuts. Sad but true. And, mind you, ten years ago the teachers were the creme de la creme of all professions as there weren't enough of them, and everyone wanted to learn a foreign language.
What will happen will be a standard process for most jobs: the best qualified and experienced ones will still earn a lot, while the wages for rookies will continue to go down; there will also be the "standard" teacher who isn't willing to work harder and is happy with whatever they are making as long as they have a job.
What the government doesn't understand is that it's still hard to communicate in English in this country; with inevitably higher (+VAT) prices, less and less people will learn at good schools. Warren, Steve, and others will lose their customers who will look for cheap "korepetycje" with students, and then complain about the slow progress or the lack of it. But it will cost them 15 PLN per hour (private tutorials), no VAT (and, in most cases, no tax).Tatiana S. edytował(a) ten post dnia 28.10.09 o godzinie 12:18

But that's the schools excuse.

With a lot of unqualified English native speakers having come to Warsaw. Dumping prices for qualified Polish English teachers and qualified native speakers. Why are they here? Because of the crisis. Without it they wouldn't come.
Sad but true.
Yes, there are more teachers. Polish ones and natives. But a lot of qualified natives left over the last two years Warsaw due to bad treatment by schools.
And, mind you, ten years ago the teachers were the creme de la creme of all professions as there weren't enough of them, and everyone wanted to learn a foreign language.
I know. But ten years ago Warsaw was much cheaper too.

Not true. Many qualified people around me (non-natives) are offered ridiculous wages and hours. Or even fired because they dare having an opinion about things.
while the wages for rookies will continue to go down; there will also be the "standard" teacher who isn't willing to work harder and is happy with whatever they are making as long as they have a job.
A vicious circle...

True. Sadly. But yes.
That's what all the qualified persons now say: Okay, I take it, I work this shitty hours and for this low salary but don't expect the best service. That'll backlash altogether...

Making language schools pay VAT will be a massive boost for the 'grey' economy which doesn't, of course, pay VAT.

There's a tax in Turkey (again, sorry guys)... they pay a tax over the stated value in rental contracts.
Weird.

Most owners don't register that they are renting the flats. Technically they just own it. So no, they don't pay tax on their income.
Similar to what Warren wrote about the grey economoy in the private tutoring market.
Since the law isn't too clear on that, the business is conducted without contracts, without notifications, etc.

It does not make me feel good. Why is the government making everything more complicated and unfair? Oh yeah maybe they should cut on their enormous salaries instead...Temat: Language schools to pay VAT:
What's funny about this is, if it actually goes ahead, the government may see its revenues reduced.Because it will drive those English schools which pay taxes out of business, and improve the competitiveness of those who teach 'unofficially'.

Wait a minute. Not quite sure what you're referring to.. Do you imagine as a customer renting (and paying rent in advance) a flat/apartment WITHOUT signing a contract? And as the flat owner, why on earth would you want to take the risk of NOT signing such a thing - that's where all liability clauses are included. The only time this could actually take place is between friends or people that know each other - they'd rather not report the income and take the risk.

I never had a contract. Every time I asked about legal documents/registration/contract the flat was not given to me.
Anyways, a contract, like a mutual agreement between two parties, does not mean, that the flat owners pay taxes off their income ;) The state doesn't now that you live in a flat in Warsaw if you come from Elblag and are registered there... ;)
The last statistics I knew on this topic is that people who rent an apartment in Warsaw don't stay longer there than 5-6month, then they move either to a bigger apartment, a cheaper one or had the possibility of buying one.
